Hiking and Mountaineering in the Allgäu

Tie your boots and breathe in the crisp, alpine air. Whether you are looking for a relaxed family stroll along sun-drenched hills, a panoramic walk around sparkling lakes, or a challenging ridge hike across rugged limestone peaks—the Allgäu is Germany’s ultimate hiking paradise, offering paths for every level of adventure.

    The Diversity of the Alps

The true magic of hiking in the Allgäu lies in its incredible variety. The landscape changes beautifully from north to south, seamlessly blending three distinct hiking zones on three altitude levels into one unforgettable outdoor experience.

The Idyllic Paths and Wellness Trails of the Unterallgäu

In the northern part of the region, the Unterallgäu offers a wonderfully peaceful hiking experience characterized by rolling meadows, shady forests, and quiet river valleys on the region's lowest altitude level. This area is famous for its relaxed, themed walking trails and historical pilgrim paths, such as the Crescentia Pilgrim Waystarting in Kaufbeuren. It is also the proud birthplace of Sebastian Kneipp’s world-famous water therapy; along the trails, you will find crystal-clear, natural Kneipp wading pools designed to refresh your feet and revitalize your mind after a rewarding day of walking.

The Gentle Hills of the Westallgäu

A little further south you find the idyllic rolling hills of the Westallgäu. This is the second altitude level, perfect for pleasure hikers and families. Wander through lush green meadows, past historic cheese dairies, and through mystical gorges like the Eistobel close to Isny. Here, the paths are gentle, the views are wide, and the focus is on pure relaxation amidst pristine, sunlit nature.

The Sparkling Lakes of the Ostallgäu

Moving towards the royal south, the landscape transforms into a dramatic canvas where the mountains meet the water. The Ostallgäu is famous for its panoramic valleys and mid-altitude trails. Hike along the shores of legendary lakes like the Forggensee or Alpsee, with the fairytale silhouette of Neuschwanstein Castle and the sharp edges of the Ammergau Alps always in your line of sight.

The Rugged Peaks of the Allgäu High Alps

For those who hear the calling of the high mountains, the majestic Allgäuer Alpen await in the Oberallgäu. This third altitude level is the playground for mountaineers and peak baggers. Accessible via modern cable cars or challenging trails, legendary massifs like the Nebelhorn and Fellhorn offer thrilling ridge walks, steep rocky climbs, and rewarding summit crosses surrounded by a breathtaking sea of alpine peaks.

Insider Tips for Hikers and Mountaineers

The Trailside Greeting: When passing other hikers on narrow mountain paths, it’s local tradition to acknowledge each other. A friendly, smiling "Servus" or "Griaß di" (the regional alpine hello) is all you need to blend right in with the outdoor community.
