300 metres into the Earth’s core

Anyone venturing into the old rock today, walks almost horizontally through a tunnel to the Dragon’s gate first of all. You climb over secured steps and grid floors which you can look through down into a shaft. Further down, the path leads into the mouth of the cave and meanwhile also Hell’s mouth, right to the bottom where you hear the stream flowing in the depths. Once at the bottom, you’re situated roughly 300 metres vertically below the surface and this thought alone can send one or two shivers down your spine. If the water level is low, a glittering granite rock peeks out of the stream, if there’s lots of snow and rain water though, the cave basin can be completely flooded too resulting in the guided tour having to be finished at an earlier point. Markings on the wall show the flooding levels over the course of the years and when you think about the forces of water that were at work here, it makes you shiver just that little bit more.
